An introduction to Facebook

By now, you are most likely familiar with the popular social networking website called Facebook, even if perhaps you have not ventured into its network yet. I say yet, because chances are…..you will!Facebook launched in 2004, and according to Wikipedia, has more than 80 million active users worldwide. There is nothing else like it online. And it is not the domain of teenagers only. Whilst teenagers are most certainly on there and loving it, the average user age on Facebook is estimated at 39.

I Was Very Skeptical At First

Actually it has taken me a long time to get on board with Facebook. Admittedly the same was true for me and Blogging and I am quickly becoming as keen on Facebook as I am on Blogging.

I feel like I was pushed into discovering Facebook. Many of my friends, colleagues and clients kept asking for my opinion on it, and asking if I was on there yet? I had registered several months ago on the urging of a good friend of mine in New Zealand, but I never really could figure out what all the fuss was about.

I wanted to discover why Facebook is so popular. I wanted to know how they managed to gain millions of members so quickly? And why so many people are talking about it? I had to know!

So, finally 2 weeks ago I logged back in and spent my Saturday exploring and discovering the potential that exists in Facebook. Today I have reached 100 “friends” and look forward to growing my Facebook network more (why not join me - see below).

How Did Facebook Become So Popular, So Fast?

The ability to keep tabs on friends, create content, upload and share images, network for business and search for people is phenomenal. It’s so simple, but yet extremely powerful. In just 2 short weeks I have connected with friends and business networks worldwide.

Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, region, interest group and can easily interact with their “friends”. Users can search for and add friends and send them messages, update their personal profile, update their status, upload blog posts, play games, watch videos and do many more things on Facebook.

Where To From Here?

I see Facebook as only growing in popularity and I am so glad I have discovered it. If you have not yet, then you can go to www.facebook.com to register and begin the fun journey. Or read some more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook

But beware, there are hours to be wasted once you become hooked which can happen pretty fast. I think the business network possibilities will make the time worthwhile and who can complain about having some social fun!

If you have a story to tell about your Facebook experience please post it as a comment below!

If you are on Facebook or decide to register please go ahead and add me as a friend, I’d be happy to receive your request.

  1. Hi Belinda from Canada,

I too was “forced” to join facebook. :-) I really don’t use it all that often but it is a neat idea.

I wanted to let you know about another very popular website, at least in North America. It is “LinkedIn” and its drive is far more business oriented. It may be more useful for business affairs than facebook, but maybe not as fun. :-) Ithas recently undergone a great new facelift and is easy to use and build networks.

Thanks for your awesome newsletter. I look forward to seeing it every time.

    See ya!

    Simone

  2. Thanks for your comment Simone. LinkedIn is also a great online social networking meeting place, I agree. It is great to have your positive comments on my newsletter, I appreciate it! Cheers, Belinda
